On BBC4 Tonight...
Don paves the way for his new film Skinhead, which will be broadcast on BBC 4 on Friday 14th October, with his moonstomping mix of the original movement's best-loved sounds from the likes of Laurel Aitken, Desmond Dekker, Derrick Morgan and the Pioneers.
He says: "When I tell people my first point of entry into youth subculture was via skinheads, they look somewhat confused, not understanding I'm talking about the fashion version not the fascist version. I hope my film goes some way to clarifying what was the UK's first real multi-cultural movement."In Skinhead, Don looks at this very particular and very provocative British subculture. He explores how skinhead has become associated with street fighting, trouble on the football terraces and violent racism in the public consciousness, both in Britain and around the world. He reveals that its origins actually lie in a cultural coming-together that could not be further from its tarnished image.

Im not sure I really get this re-branding of skinheads as lovable chaps who fully embraced multi culturalism and just liked to dress differently- growing up in the 70's each and every one was toothless, thick, liked a tinny and lot of whizz, their women were slappers and they couldnever imagine a one on one fight- pissed up brain dead bullies, the lot of 'em!

Emrace it, because it's the truth. The blacks were the first skinheads in London, listening to ska, which the white lads realised was double cool. so followed suit.
It is one of the biggest and sadest ironies in the world of fashions and trends that meathead racists evetually highjacked the image.

SHARP.... Skinheads Against Racial Prejudice
From what my old Man told us it was just the tougher Mods who never fancied going all flower powery and retro and wanted their own direction... lot of Mod music was already based on Blue Beat and Jamaican Ska... clobber was similar.. it was a natural progress...
Regarding Skinhead birds... I have seen and met some absolute stunners over the years at do's and rally's....

In all seriousness though it's a complete different species between the 70-80's Boneheads (who we hated with a passion) and the original roots SHARP Skins.. you go to a Scooter do now you'll get Mods and Skins all dancing to the same records... having a beer at the bar... that never happened when I was a Mod late 70's early 80's... I saw far more trouble between those youth cults than I ever did at football..

I was a kiddie punk and then a casual in the late 70s/early 80s There was some antagonism between punks and mods, and later casuals and mods, but the Oi/NF boneheads were an all-round fucking nightmare.

My Dad used to get proper pissed off about the Bonehead skinheads, and just as pissed off about the Mods in that era.He always said the Skinheads and Mods of the 60's were far more smarter in style (handmade suits etc) and a lot more about the music than the scruffs he witnessed (parkers/dm's), he also said the Skinheads were more cropped hair with side burns rather than fully shaved off.

Most skinheads I knew/met back in the late 70's/early 80's were as racist as the day is long. Though I was never sure how they squared it with loving Ska and reggae, which most of the ones I knew did.
They weren't all that way inclined. But to pretend it was anything less than a decent size majority is selective memory on the part of blokes now in their 40's/50's/60's, not wanting to be judged by modern standards for the shit they thought/got up to when they were in their teens and twenties.
I hated the shit thick, bullying cunts.
